Bullwhip Dolly and the Dancehall Darlin's
![]() |
Saturday March 23, 1878 It seemed like an act straight from P.T. Barnum’s circus last night at the Town Hall Saloon on Eye witnesses say the place was crowded and much merrymaking was proceeding. Dolly Simmons was seen during the evening entertaining a certain gentleman at the bar. A local businessman, John Miller, entered the bar. Mr. Miller is believed to be part owner of the Town Hall Saloon but records of his involvement can not be confirmed. Witnesses report that Mr. Miller became outraged at the sight of Miss Simmons cavorting with the unidentified gentleman. The two squared off in the midst of the crowd and uncovered their sidearm. Miss Simmons, in an attempt to keep all patrons from harm, calmly stood and grabbed a bullwhip hanging on a nearby chair. The whip was owned by local mule wrangler, Phineas Washburn. Without flinching, Miss Simmons struck two blows with the whip, one blow toward Mr. Miller and one toward the unidentified man. In a split second, Mr. Miller’s holster leather with the gun inside was slashed off from his belt and the other man lost his right pinky finger to the whip cracking Miss Simmons. Both men quickly left the saloon with nary a shot fired. The patrons cheered at the spectacle and throughout the night referred to Miss Simmons as “Bullwhip”. Mr. Washburn was offered 20 dollars on the spot for the whip wielded by the infamous Miss Simmons. This night certainly will be recounted for years to come! |
